Ugunja Small Shops: The Catalysts of Digital Inclusion in Kenya

Once solely hubs of traditional trade, In Ugunja, Siaya, small shops in Ambira, Kayomb, and Ugunja town have evolved into powerhouses of digital inclusion, reshaping communities by providing essential internet access and bridging the digital divide.

At the heart of this transformation is Kijiji Yeetu Africa Network, connecting 30 shops and hubs to unlock digital opportunities. Through partnerships with Internet Society Foundation, 48percent.org, and the Association for Progressive Communications, this initiative is changing lives—enabling seamless mobile payments, dynamic e-learning, and expanding access to online business and education.

By empowering local traders as digital champions, Ugunja is cultivating a resilient, inclusive digital economy that strengthens communities and drives progress.

This is more than connectivity, and it’s a movement. This movement is not just about internet access. It is about revolutionizing livelihoods.

Enabling seamless mobile payments, driving e-learning, and unlocking entrepreneurial potential, these shops have become vessels of possibility, transcending barriers and fostering a future where no one is left behind. By empowering local traders as stewards of connectivity, Ugunja is crafting an ecosystem of resilience—one where digital inclusion is not an aspiration, but a lived reality. This is more than a technological shift—it is a societal transformation, one fueled by the determination of communities to shape their futures.
