Data is no longer just information—it is the “Modern-Day Oil” fueling business, development, and personal empowerment. As digital systems become central to daily life, data protection and digital rights are critical to ensuring fair and secure participation in this new era. Kijiji Yeetu Africa Network took a bold step forward by joining the #IjueDataYako training, hosted by ICON Data and Learning Labs (IDL). Over two days, 25 youth CSO leaders from Kisumu and Kakamega counties explored the essential role of Community Networks in providing affordable internet access while promoting awareness around digital rights and data protection.

Community networks generate vast amounts of data daily—from billing systems to local servers—highlighting the urgent need for robust safeguards to protect information and empower individuals.
Digital rights matter! While internet access is a fundamental right, privacy must not be overlooked. As community networks continue to bridge digital gaps, they face real risks such as data breaches and privacy threats. That’s why Kijiji Yeetu remains committed to educating youth and women on privacy regulations and data protection laws, ensuring communities are well-equipped to navigate the digital age securely.
County governments are stepping up to support data governance and ensure that local communities play an active role in co-creating digital solutions—because the future of data belongs to the people! Empowered communities, protected data, and a digitally secure future. This is the revolution we must champion.
