Ugunja Youth Drive Change Through Social Accountability and Policy Advocacy
In a remarkable display of commitment to fostering active citizenship, the 3-day workshop for 30 participants in Ugunja, Kenya, empowered young people with the tools
In 2011, amidst the bustling environment of iHub at Bishop Magua Plaza on Ngong Road, a transformative idea was born. This idea, now known as Kijiji Yeetu, sought to address the stark realities facing youth in villages such as Ugunja, Kisii, Machakos, and Tana River, as well as in the informal settlements of Nairobi. These areas have seen young people left behind as employment opportunities grow increasingly scarce, leading to higher rates of addiction, crime, violence, early marriage, and prostitution. Furthermore, access to technology and the internet has become prohibitively expensive, limiting opportunities for growth and development.
Recognizing these challenges, Kijiji Yeetu initiated dialogue activities to engage youth in these target areas, fostering innovative ideas and community-driven solutions. This grassroots approach quickly gained support, with key partners such as Amani Kibera, Oasis Mathare, County Governance Watch, and Usalama Forum providing critical support during the pivotal year of 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
In February 2020, Kijiji Yeetu was formally registered as a non-profit organization with the Government Registrar of Societies.
By collaborating with our ICT partners, Liquid Telecom and Google Taara, we continuously enhance internet access, thereby improving the availability of online resources and educational tools. Our strategy focuses on creating smart villages, connecting the unconnected, and bridging the digital divide in Ugunja.
We empower change in rural communities in three main ways, that is, digital transformation and innovation, multi-stakeholder dialogue, and communities of practice.
We offer market-relevant digital skills for young people through our e-Learning portal to help solve unemployment among young people – especially in rural villages – such as Ugunja. Our portal is stacked with courses ranging from IT support to data analytics to cybersecurity to digital marketing and e-commerce. Our goal is to provide equal opportunities for young people to participate in Africa’s burgeoning digital economy.
Our strategy is activating smart villages, connecting the unconnected, and bridging the digital divide in Ugunja.

This isn't just a story of connectivity; it's a revolution. The Digital rampage teaches students about internet safety and secure digital literacy. Teacher training equips us to leverage internet resources. The digital transformation in Ugunja is a testament to community spirit. It is a story that inspires our community to tell it among generations.
We embrace the aphorism “If you want to go faster, go alone; if you want to go further, go together.” As a result, we are always looking for institutions to collaborate with to deliver our agenda for the benefit of our communities. We collaborate with other institutions for grant funding opportunities, hosting multistakeholder dialogue events, and training on ICT, among others.
